In a way, the growth and reach of secret societies in SIN is a reflection of the prominence of civil society in SIN? Secret societies are self-help interest grps, although a tad shady and menancing. They were big and powerful all the way from 1800s to the 60s. Look around now, they are basically reduced to street gangs doing loanshark duties.
I don't think secret society would fall under civil society. At least not under the political science definition. I am sure you could argue otherwise.
